Productivity and process performance in a manual trimming cell exploiting Lean Six Sigma (LSS) DMAIC – a case study in laminated panel production

Purpose The purpose of this case study is to investigate inefficiency and downtime factors within a panel lamination process cell at timber component manufacturing company. Areas concern related predominantly the manual trimming or finishing range laminated panels for caravan leisure industry. intermittent feeding inputs material outputs was also investigated during study. Design/methodology/approach conducted over six-month period using Six Sigma defining, measuring, analysing, improving controlling (DMAIC) construct. But equally supported through combination tools both applied in lean statistical properties commonly assigned projects. Findings This paper provides insights about identification root causes poor productivity overall equipment effectiveness issues experienced by trimming/finishing operations production cell. It identifies solutions overcome these benefits (such as improved OEE, reduced savings staffing costs) that were obtained due application solutions. contributes understanding interconnections fork-lift truck movements with staff members working areas connected Originality/value new knowledge into performance small medium enterprise. By applying elements Sigma' quality focussed analytical methods DMAIC structure, simultaneously waste reduction method manufacturing, useful perspective on why improvement-based ideologies are manufacturing.
